Global consultation of the draft Global disaster-related statistics framework

On behalf of the co-chairs of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics (IAEG-DRS), we are pleased to announce the launch of the global consultation on the draft Global Disaster-Related Statistics Framework (G-DRSF)—a milestone in advancing global standards for disaster-related data.

The development of the G-DRSF has been a coordinated effort led by UNDRR, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This initiative directly responds to United Nations Statistical Commission Decision 50/116, which calls for the creation of a unified and internationally accepted statistical framework for disaster-related statistics.

A Global Effort Rooted in Collaboration

The draft G-DRSF represents the collective output of more than four years of collaboration among experts from official statistics, disaster risk reduction, geospatial information, and a wide range of national and international institutions. This broad and diverse cooperation ensures that the framework is rigorous, comprehensive, and globally relevant.

G-DRSF aims to establish a harmonized international approach to compiling statistics related to:

  • Disaster risk

  • Disaster impacts

  • Risk reduction activities

  • Preparedness and resilience indicators

By offering standardized definitions, methodologies, and indicators, the framework is designed to support countries in strengthening data quality and enhancing disaster risk governance. With robust data, policymakers, government agencies, and global partners can make more informed decisions, enabling evidence-based strategies to build resilient societies.

Supporting Global Agendas for a Safer Future

The G-DRSF is aligned with major international frameworks, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By improving the production of reliable, comparable disaster-related statistics, the framework supports countries in monitoring progress, managing risks, and reducing vulnerabilities.

Enhanced disaster-related statistics will help governments:

  • Assess risks and vulnerabilities more accurately

  • Improve early warning and preparedness

  • Guide investments in resilience

  • Track progress on national and global disaster risk reduction goals

Invitation to Participate in the Global Consultation

The global consultation invites feedback and participation from a wide range of stakeholders, including:

  • National statistical offices

  • National disaster risk management authorities

  • Sectoral ministries and agencies

  • Regional and international organizations

  • Non-governmental organizations

  • Academic and research institutions

  • Experts working in geospatial, environment, and disaster-related domains

Your insight and contributions are essential in refining the G-DRSF and ensuring it meets the needs of countries across different regions and levels of development. This consultation is a key step in shaping a globally endorsed framework that will guide disaster-related statistics for years to come.
