Learn about statistics, understand the world around you
Societies today are faced with
misinformation and disinformation, declining trust in media and the
groundbreaking impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on everyday life.
Official statistics and statistical literacy are essential for navigating the
world around us.
To help you make sense of
statistics, Eurostat’s Education Corner offers many resources
tailored for teachers, students and all the inquisitive minds. With Statistics
4 beginners’ articles, you can learn about key statistical indicators, such
as what is GDP and how to compare it among countries
and population concepts.
You can also explore and play
with data with our interactive publications. These present short summaries
of the key findings on specific topics, such as regions in Europe, demography, digitalisation,
and energy, while showcasing dynamic visualisations. Furthermore, you can
dive into our data visualisations and discover how your country
compares with others in Europe.
Our Statistical literacy
newsletter is also an excellent way to keep up-to-date on the latest tools
and resources from Eurostat and the statistical offices in EU countries. Sign
up and receive it directly in your inbox.
The recorded webinars “Unlocking
informed decisions with high-quality statistics” and “Navigate European
statistics with Eurostat” are a good option if you are looking for visual
presentations with relevant information. Check our webinars page to
find other recordings on a statistical topic that interests you.
If you prefer to listen to a
podcast, we have podcast episodes that delve into the importance of
statistical literacy and how we promote it, fact-checking and trust in
times of fake news, and how the European Statistics Competition empowers
young people.
In our ongoing efforts to promote
statistical literacy among secondary school students, we have just launched the
9th edition of the European Statistics Competition, which we invite you to
join.
This news item marks Global
Media and Information Literacy Week, observed from 24 to 31 October, to
raise awareness and celebrate achievements in media and information literacy
for all.
Statistics were always a
cornerstone of the European project, starting with the creation of the
statistics division of the Coal and Steel Community (ESCS) in 1952 and later
with our predecessor, the Statistical Office of the European Communities
(1958-1992). Since then, we have expanded our statistical coverage and
diversified the channels to reach users. Our mission, however, remains ever
evolving: to provide high-quality statistics and data on Europe. Our commitment
reflects the dedication of all our colleagues, who work tirelessly to make
numbers and data available and easily accessible, which helps everyone
understand the world around them.
