Rare species can be mapped more accurately with new statistical approach

Image
Information on Earth's biodiversity is increasingly collected using DNA-, image- and audio-based sampling. At the same time, new statistical analysis methods are being developed to make more out of the collected data, providing detailed information on Earth's biodiversity and its status. Now, an international research group has developed a new statistical approach for jointly modeling the distributions of up to millions of species. The new approach improves predictions especially on rare species that have remained difficult to model with earlier approaches. Earth is home to several millions of species, and only a fraction of nature's diversity is currently known. One reason for this is that many rare species are difficult to detect, which means that we may not even know about their existence, or at least that there is a lack of information available to evaluate their endangerment status. This can lead to inaccurate and incomplete assessments of their abundance and the rea...

Caring for soils: measure, monitor, manage

Image
Our planet’s survival depends on the precious link with soil. Over 95 percent of our food comes from soils. Besides, they supply 15 of the 18 naturally occurring chemical elements essential to plants. However, in the face of climate change and human activity, our soils are being degraded. Erosion disrupts the natural balance, reducing water infiltration and availability for all forms of life, and decreasing the level of vitamins and nutrients in food. Sustainable soil management practices, such as minimum tillage, crop rotation, organic matter addition, and cover cropping, improve soil health, reduce erosion and pollution, and enhance water infiltration and storage. These practices also preserve soil biodiversity, improve fertility, and contribute to carbon sequestration, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change. World Soil Day 2024 (WSD) campaign, under the theme Caring for soils: measure, monitor, manage underscores the importance of accurate s...

Bureau of Labor Statistics postpones key data report

Image
Why it matters : The BLS — charged with collecting critical data on employment, prices and more — did not explain the reasoning for the delay or when it might ultimately be released. There is heightened concern about the future of U.S. statistics, including the politicization and accuracy of crucial data that affects the stock market and interest rates. Zoomin : The BLS said on Friday that the annual release of consumer expenditures data — initially set for Tuesday — would be "rescheduled to a later date." "We will update users when more information is available," the notice said. The Bureau of Labor Statistics did not respond to a request for a comment. Neither did The Department of Labor, which oversees the statistics agency. Thebig picture : The data offers key insights about consumer activity in any given year, including expenditures, income and demographic information. It is the only "federal h...

How good have models been at predicting ENSO in the 21st century?

Image
In the, roughly, 250 years of the ENSO Blog and our 3.4 million posts, we’ve discussed ad nauseum how complicated El Niño and La Niña are, and how difficult it is to forecast all of the ENSO nuances. Heck, I even wrote a three-part series 75 years ago that evaluated all of our seasonal forecasts (ok, it was 2014-2015 but it still feels that long ago). In a new paper, Azhar Ehsan, friend of the blog and a member of NOAA’s ENSO forecast team, and colleagues analyzed over 20 years’ worth of climate model forecasts of ENSO and found some interesting results. Why is this paper unique? Well, most seasonal forecasting evaluations focus on model hindcasts, which are forecasts run using past observational data as the start (or initial) condition. For example, if the models are provided the initial conditions on July 1 st , 1983, what forecast would it have made? The nice thing about running on past data is that you already know what occurred ...

Why e-commerce companies are making content a core part of their business strategy

Image
According to a report by Boston Consulting Group, 2-2.5 million content creators are influencing over $350-400 billion in consumer spending in India. Brands like Myntra have seen a 20% rise in conversions with users who engage with content compared with consumers that do not. When Flipkart acquired a majority stake in infotainment platform Pinkvilla earlier this month, it became the latest e-commerce player to double down on content marketing. Its fashion platform Myntra also recently launched Glamstream, a shoppable video destination with short-form content that is integrated with the brand’s product range. Rival Nykaa has also been upping its content game with Nykaa TV, its YouTube channel, while also building its influencer-led programmes like the Nykaa Army. Amazon has of course been leading the content playbook with Prime and Amazon MX Player. E-commercebets big on content-led commerce to woo Gen Z According to a report by Boston Consulting Group, 2...

Ecommerce App Revenue and Usage Statistics (2025)

Image
In the past two decades, the ecommerce industry has shifted from a wide array of websites specialising in a single category, think Amazon (books), Zappos (apparel), Newegg (electronics) and Stubhub (tickets), to a few marketplaces stocking as many items as possible. Wayfair is perhaps the best example of this change, in 2011 it combined over 200 stores, such as cookware.com, luggage.com and strollers.com, into a single ecommerce marketplace. In North America and Europe, Amazon led that transition from single category to everything. In 2005, it launched Prime as a way to speed up deliveries, and later added Prime Video, Prime Music and a host of other premium services to draw in more customers. In the past five years, there have been a few new challengers to Amazon's dominance in North America, namely Wish and Wayfair. However, in revenue and usage Amazon is still far ahead of these challengers. Outside of North America, Amazon has struggled to control the new challengers. Shopee ...

Smarter hypothesis testing with statistics: How e-values can improve scientific research

Image
Imagine this: you repeatedly bet an amount of your choice on a fair coin, which has an equal chance of landing heads or tails. If it lands on heads, you double your money; if it lands on tails, you lose it. On average, you expect to break even—it's a fair bet. You start with €1 and, each round, bet everything you have. If you happen to get heads eight times in a row, you'll end up with €64 and might start to wonder: is this coin really fair? That is the concept behind e-values: they help you assess whether an assumption still holds. The e-value (where 'e' stands for expected value) offers an alternative to the p-value (with 'p' standing for probability), which researchers traditionally use to test their hypotheses. The p-value comes with a major limitation: in principle, you're only supposed to draw conclusions once you've collected all your data. If you later decide to add more measurements, your statistical analysis is no longer valid. "A lot of...

Major jobs revision today could show the labor market is weaker than previously thought

Image
The latest jobs report points to a labor market that's faltering, but the slowdown may have begun much earlier. Economists expect the Bureau of Labor Statistics to issue a major downward revision today, showing the nation added hundreds of thousands fewer jobs than first reported. On Sept. 9, the BLS will release its preliminary benchmark revision to labor market data at 10 a.m. ET, which aims to better account for businesses that have opened or closed. Economists say the revision, covering the 12-month period through March 2025, could show that hiring during that time was about 800,000 jobs lower than previously reported.  The report could draw attention from the Trump administration, as the president last month questioned the validity of the monthly jobs report — and fired the commissioner of the BLS — after the data included a significant downward revision. Hiring experts and economists point to a job market that's stalling out as some busine...

The average monthly income of agricultural households, at current prices, stood at ₹28,984 in 2024, according to the Situation Assessment Survey of Agricultural Households in Kerala: 2024-25, compiled by the department in collaboration with the Agriculture Department. In addition to these sources, the earnings from pensions and remittances stood at ₹6,348. “This income profile underscores a high dependence on wage labour, indicating the limited profitability or scale of agricultural operations on own-farm holdings,” the report observed. ...
